STEER Education’s USTEER Course for Sixth Form aims to equip 16-18 year olds with the soft skills needed to succeed beyond school - in an apprenticeship, a university course, the workplace and life

Student performance is assessed directly by the app without teacher involvement, reducing teacher workload

The Course provides 20 fully resourced Plug and Play video-based lessons and materials

10 x Theory Lessons

The Course Content and Structure

The course journey is split over three pathways.

The delivery of the USTEER Course can be split over six terms across Y12 and Y13 according to the requirements of the school timetable. A common schedule is for Pathways 1 and 2 to be completed in Y12, and then Pathway 3 in Y13, as shown below.

Schools generally teach the USTEER Course in PSHE or General Studies lessons

Theory Lessons can be taught in a class or larger groups (e.g. a whole year)

Practical Lessons can be taught to smaller groups (e.g. a tutor group or a class)

Who is STEER Education?

 

STEER Education was founded in 2011 by Dr Simon and Dr Jo Walker with the aim of equipping young people to steer the social-emotional challenges of adolescence.

In 2013 STEER launched STEER Tracking, a ground-breaking mental health safeguarding application to track and improve students’ steering biases from the age of 8-18. STEER built up a database of adolescent steering patterns from 2013, which now includes more than 150,000 students. This unique historic and pandemic dataset gave Public Health England the ability to understand the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the wellbeing of students in the UK.

STEER is now used by more than 250 schools, and performance organisations including the Premier League.

 

The USTEER Course was built by listening to business

The USTEER Course design was led by Dr Simon Walker, a psychologist and executive coach who taught leadership at Oxford University for 7 years. Simon has delivered leadership training for Accenture, KPMG, McKinsey and Astra Zeneca and many other businesses and authored the award-winning Undefended Leader Trilogy.
